This location lies at the north side of St Malo, close to the village of Rotheneuf and is the starting point of the Festung St Malo in the north. From here starts the direct coast defence of St Malo and begins the Landfront to protect the inland side of the Festung St Malo from attacks over land.
On the Point de la Varde was already an old French fort that has been used by the Germans and extended with several bunkers and facilities. Because of its position on the Point and its strategic means itwas heavily equipped with 75mm guns, mortars, Pak guns and MG's. There are two St-bunkers with a cupola on top and there are some SK bunkers situated. The Point was also defended by a dry tank ditch and lots of barbed wire.
The remains of the heavy fighting and the use of anti tank grenades by the Americans, who captured this location, is still visible.
